The opening ceremony of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio's painting Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy took place on May 3rd, 2024.
This year marks 100th anniversary of the establishment of modern museum in Mongolia. As a part of this anniversary, Chinggis Khaan National Museum, with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Mongolia, exhibited for the first time in Mongolia the original painting “Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy” by Caravaggio, representative of the Renaissance of the Republic of Italy and the great master use of strong contrast light and dark, to the people of Mongolia and the every person who visited Mongolia. We are opening up the opportunity to present to everyone within two months. This exhibition was opened in the temporary exhibition hall of the 9th floor of the Chinggis Khaan National Museum (2024.05.03) by the Director of the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, Academician S. Chuluun, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to Mongolia, Giovanna Piccarreta, Director General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign affairs of the Republic of Italy, Alessandro De Pedys, restorer of artworks of the Republic of Italy Dr. Cinzia Pasquali, and head of the Department of Coordination of Arts and Policy of the Ministry of Culture B. Sergelen, participated in the opening.
Opening the exhibition, Chinggis Khaan National Museum director and academician S. Chuluun said, "For the first time in the museum's 100-year history, the work of a world classic artist is displayed in Mongolia. It will be a mirror of Italian-Mongolian cultural, scientific and artistic cooperation. The museum accepted, the golden statue of Chinggis Khaan, which was made in Florence, Italy. On the initiative of the President of Mongolia, the Chinggis Khaan National Museum has been working together with major art and culture centers of the world for more than two years since its establishment. "With the establishment of the Chinggis Khan National Museum, world classics and cultural heritages of Mongolia abroad can be exhibited in Mongolia, and there is an opportunity to spread Mongolian cultural heritage to the world and benefit from world culture".
The ambassador, Ms. Giovanna Piccarreta, said, "Republic of Italy is famous in the world for the art of restoration, it has a long tradition. This artwork contains all the features of painting, through this artwork, we will provide an opportunity to strengthen cooperation aimed at reviving and popularizing the art works that represent the cultural heritage and unique features of our country."
During the exhibition, a film based on painting and the life of the artist will be shown, and students studying culture and art will be given the opportunity to see the original works of famous artist. Studying the techniques of painting, and it will also motivate young people studying restoration to study the science of restoration.
As an additional point, since it’s establishment, Chinggis Khaan National Museum has been involved in exhibitions, studies, and research with individuals, institutions, and foreign countries (France, Japan, Hungary, South Korea) within the framework of publicizing and disseminating historical monuments, artifacts and works of art.
