During the state visit of the President of Mongolia, U. Khurelsukh, to the Italian Republic, the two countries signed cooperation agreements in the fields of education, culture, science, sports, and tourism.
Within the framework of this agreement, the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, in collaboration with Galleria Borghese, one of the leading art centers in Rome, Italy, organized a special exhibition “ZANABAZAR: From Mongolia to the World of Baroque Art” which officially opened on January 19, 2026.
The artworks of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar are not only classical masterpieces of Asian art but are also presented on an equal level with world art classics. They will be exhibited for two months in the Italian cities of Rome and Turin.
At the opening of the exhibition, the Director of the Chinggis Khaan National Museum and Academician S. Chuluun stated:
“...Historical records and the legacy he left behind clearly prove that Undur Gegeen Zanabazar was an extraordinary spiritual figure who developed Buddhist art within the nomadic world of the Mongolian steppe, created magnificent works, and carried out religious reforms. His works fully embody the natural and climatic features of the nomads, their daily lifestyles, traditional rituals, and the history, philosophy, and mentality of the powerful and instructive era, and attract the attention of many people around the world as they are the color and expression of nomad art. It is of great significance that, for the first time in 20 years, the works of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar are being exhibited outside Mongolia, especially in Italy, the center of the world art renaissance.
The opening of the exhibition, which was supported by the Mongolian Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Embassy in Mongolia, and the Mongolian Embassy in Italy, was attended by Francesca Cappelletti, Director of the Galleria Borghese, Ts. Narantungalag, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to Italy, representatives of the Italy's media, art and culture scholars, and other representatives.
